Glenmont Launches ‘Greatest Glenns’ Celebration

GLENMONT, Md. — The community of Glenmont launched the “Greatest Glenns of Glenmont” celebration this weekend, a centerpiece of the broader festivities marking the 250th anniversary of Montgomery County.

Since its founding in 1771 by Revolutionary War hero General Glynn Glenmont, the town’s name has inspired families to name their children Glen, Glenn, and occasionally Glynn for over two centuries. Many of these namesakes went on to become leaders in politics, sports, and entertainment. The “Greatest Glenns” is a year-long tribute to their many contributions to Montgomery County and the world.

The celebration began this morning in the heart of Glenmont, at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Randolph Road, where county and local leaders unveiled a mural project honoring the first group of 250 Glenns.

“Glenmont is the historical cradle of Glenn-based excellence,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “From Glen Echo to Glen Burnie, Maryland communities have been emulating Glenmont for more than 250 years, but none compare to the OG.”

Council President Natali Fani-Gonzalez remarked on Glenmont's history of diversity and inclusion. “Here, Glens, Glenns, and Glynns are treated equally and live in harmony, despite Glenns being of superior intellect and possessing the obviously correct spelling.”

The celebration will include walking tours, educational programming, and a series of public murals. It culminates in what leaders say will be “the largest single gathering of Glens and Glenns in recorded history,” featuring a free concert headlined by Glenn Frey, Glen Campbell, and Glenn Miller.
