Peers Blast Fani-González for Leadership Failure

Just one month into her term, Montgomery County Council President Natali Fani-González is facing a mountain of criticism from peers who say she is failing to meet key expectations. “We had an understanding that things would be different, but so far she hasn't changed a bit and, frankly, doesn't even seem to be trying,” said Councilmember Kristin Mink.

At issue is Fani-González’s ever-present, infectious smile. “She swore she'd reserve her pearly whites for art festivals and restaurant openings, but she still flashes them everywhere—even in budget sessions!” exclaimed exasperated past president Kate Stewart. “Natali had a whole year to learn from me: the disapproving glance, the side-eye scowl, the disgusted grimace. I gave a twelve-month masterclass in haughty condescension, and it's like she wasn't even there!”

For her part, Fani-González admits she is facing the biggest leadership crisis of her political career. “People are equating my 'resting joy face' to a conspiracy against the solemnity of county governance,” she said, “but every time I attempt a proper frown, my face just... rebounds.”

Council colleagues aren't buying the excuses, pointing instead to a series of smile-related scandals that have rocked the chambers. “How are we supposed to take the collapse of new housing permits seriously when she's beaming like she just won the lottery?” demanded Councilmember Andrew Friedson.

Others agree. “If we can't trust our leaders to look miserable while raising taxes, how do we maintain the facade of not wanting to do it?” asked Councilmember Evan Glass.

Councilmember Will Jawando joined the chorus of criticism. “Under the tutelage of Scowl Sensei Elrich, I've been training in the modern tradition of snobby derision for years. A leader incapable of the contemptuous gaze or supercilious stare has no place in Montgomery County governance.”

The controversy has spilled over into public forums, where residents say Fani-González’s charming and disarming smile stifles community participation. “I came here to talk about Crown but couldn't get past her gorgeous crowns,” said a Wootton parent at a recent neighborhood forum.

As Montgomery County’s council teeters on the brink of this facial fiasco, Fani-González remains undeterred. “In the cutthroat world of local government, a smile might just be the most powerful weapon of all,” she said with a grin.
