Baby Delivered on I-270 Misses Kindergarten Enrollment Deadline

A baby delivered on southbound I-270 near the Montrose Road exit ramp in Rockville will have to wait a year to enroll in kindergarten thanks to traffic gridlock.

Parents Miles and Sienna Parker and their newborn son, whom they named Camry, made it to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital just hours after the January cutoff preceding his fourth birthday.

"We had a bad feeling when we made it to the Falls Road exit just as he took his first steps on the center console," Mr. Parker told The Leek. "But we didn't imagine having to homeschool him because of the backup."

Camry's milestones, measured by the exits—he said his first word at Tower Oaks Blvd and was potty trained by West Montgomery Avenue—mounted as the Parker family inched north.

"When we finally exited onto Shady Grove Road, Camry couldn't count past 10, and I figured we would make it before the cutoff. But the light at Rt. 28 was the last straw, and he was reciting pi to the tenth digit when we reached the delivery room," Mrs. Parker said.

Fire and EMS personnel attempted to reach the family to assist with the delivery and hospital transportation, but the Parkers had already checked into Shady Grove Adventist by the time they made it to the scene.

Mom and baby are doing well, and the Parkers expect to be discharged on Monday. They hope to get settled in their Clarksburg townhouse before Camry reaches middle school.
